2022 PREVIEW
Four wins might not seem a lot to most teams, but for Honesdale it was progress. It was the most wins for the Hornets since their last winning season back in 2014. And they did it with a number of underclassmen. Honesdale should be improved but their offensive and defensive lines will determine how much.
The Hornets coaching staff made a calculated decision to go with Aidan Collins as the quarterback as a freshman. With that year experience, he should be equipped to handle the offense. They will have to find a running back but it could be several different players including Max Mickel, C.J. Hinton, and Mason Avery. Hinton was the starting fullback and should also be in that position again. The receiving corp is very experienced with Isaac Carmody, Kage Southerton, and Kole Fries all getting significant playing time last season. Tyler Winters returns as the starter at tight end.
The offensive line will be a work in progress with only center Bryce Stone a returning starter. Anthony Passaro, Caleb Dodson and Mason Parker will be in the mix for the two tackle positions. Left guard will be either Wyatt Rutherford or Jacob Garvey and at right guard Caleb Bryant or Evan Funk.
Rocco Fluck returns at one defensive end with Carmody stepping in on the other side. Aaron Phillips is back at defensive tackle with Bryant, Garvey and Dodson in the rotation. Hinton and Winters are returning at linebacker while the group of Lance Peak, Robert Quinn, Bradley Bibalo and Avery will be considered for the other spot and provide depth. The entire secondary returns with Southerton and Cameron Hedgleon at the corners and Johnny Kauffman and Mickel at the safties.
Punter Winters will add the placekicking to his duties while Carmody is back to handle long snapping.
QUOTE FROM COACH RUSSICK: Skill position will be our strength with almost everyone but a running back (Connor Schmitt) back. Connor Schmitt was our lead back the past two years. Replacing him will be a huge test for our team pre-season. We have a number of varsity running backs who have seen varsity action in the backfield (Max Mickel, CJ Hinton, & Jeffery Santos). We also have a great group of rising sophomores who will compete for time (Mason Avery, Bradley Bibalo & Robert Quinn). Having a returning signal caller in Aiden Collins will be huge for our development this season. We will be breaking in 4 new offensive lineman. It will come down to how quickly we can get our new starters to mature and pick up the offense. Our entire secondary is back for their 3rd year together. They are battle tested and need to continue to develop. CJ Hinton is back to lead the defense at MLB for the 3rd year. 2 of 4 starters return up front in Rocco Fluck and Aaron Phillips who had great years. Finding rotational guys and developing some of our young guys will be key to our success.
