2022 PREVIEW
There was no doubt the Royals were one of the most exciting teams in the WVC. But that came with a price as they only managed two wins. The hope is to improve in other aspects of the game in order to be more competitive on week-by-week basis.
Two of those talented offensive players return in quarterback Jacob Hunter, who was third in District 2 in passing yards, and wide receiver Zach Perta, who was fifth in receptions. Josh Wesneski is also back at running back and will be backed up by Luke Kopec and Darryl Wright. Louis Lussi was the third receiver last season and will join Perta in the starting lineup. D.J. McDermott, Tristan Block, and Tommy Dugan will provide depth. Jake Griffin is the new fullback and Yovanny Martinez is the new tight end.
Right tackle Jeffrey Kozerski and center Ryan Garvin return on the offensive line. Chris Marriott will take over the left tackle position while Kacy Miller and Phil Latinski will compete at left guard. Alex Hanson is expected to be the right guard and Cole Lisowski will provide depth up front.
The defense allowed 391 points last year, most in the WVC so improvement is needed. Defensive tackle Owen Boshek is the only returning starter up front. He will be joined by either Hanson or Marriott inside. The new defensive ends will be Martinez and Michael Fino. Kozerski is one of the better returning linebackers in the league and will play inside. Garvin returns as a starter at outside linebacker. Griffin and McDermott will also see time there. The secondary will be the strength of the unit with all four starters returning: Perta and Lussi at the cornerbacks and Wesneski and Hunter at the safties. Wright and Kopec will provide depth.
Wesneski and/or Tyler Tarnalicki will handle the kicking and punting duties and Kozerski returns as the long snapper.
QUOTE FROM COACH KELLEY: We are excited about the potential we have on both sides of the ball. Offensively we return some of the best talent in the WVC – QB Jacob Hunter, RB/Athlete Josh Wesneski, WR’s Zach Perta and Louis Lussi, and T Jeff Kozerski. Returnees DJ McDermott, Chris Marriott, and Yovanny Martinez as well as newcomers Jake Griffin, Luke Kopec, Darryl Wright, and Alex Hanson will be heavily counted on. Defensively, Perta and Lussi will set the corners. Kozerski and Griffin will bring speed and physicality to the LB core along with Ryan Garvin, McDermott, and Kopec. Safety will be manned by Hunter and Wesneski. The D Line rotation will include scrappers Michael Fino and Owen Boshek, Martinez, Hanson, and Marriott. This group is dedicated and has been working hard all summer. We have a nice mix of experience and youth and will count on our seniors to lead the way for the continued growth of our program.
