NAME: Mike Baur
SCHOOL: Wyoming Valley West
LAST SEASON: 2013
POSITIONS: QB/WR/TE/LB
Mike Baur had to wait his turn to take over the Valley West offense, but once he did, he made a major impact. A four-year varsity player, Baur contributed as a wide receiver and tight end before becoming the starting quarterback his junior season. He ended up throwing for 3,100 yards, rushing for 1,650 yards and was responsible for 58 touchdowns. The Spartans won 20 games in the two seasons with Baur as the starting quarterback and won the Eastern Conference Championship his junior season and the District 2 Class AAAA title his senior season. He also was a leader on defense where he played inside linebacker for Valley West.
Baur was the 2013 NPF Wyoming Valley Conference Big School Offensive Player of the Year and first-team quarterback. He was also the All-District 2 quarterback. Baur was named a third-team All-State Athlete by the Pennsylvania Football News and Honorable Mention quarterback for EasternPaFootball.com. He continued his academic and football career at Division 1 FCS Lehigh University where he played four seasons, primarily at tight end.
Former Valley West coach Pat Keating on Baur: “Mike Baur was without question one of the best leaders I’ve ever had the privilege to coach. He had all the intangibles that any coach would want in a quarterback. He had size, a big arm, athleticism, and a unique ability to get the most out of his teammates. He had extremely thick skin. No moment was ever too big for him. Whenever there was a play that needed to be made in a big moment, I had complete confidence in putting the ball in Mike’s hands. Throughout high school, Mike carried a 4.0 GPA, and because of his leadership qualities he had the utmost respect from his teachers, teammates, and coaches. I’ve been blessed to have coached a number of great quarterbacks throughout my coaching career and Mike is definitely in the top tier on that list.”
