One of reasons Jay Popson was so successful during his high school career is that he elevated his teammates to another level. Popson was a three-year starter at quarterback and as a team captain his senior season, led Crestwood to a District 2 Class AAA title. For his career, he threw for 2,734 yards and 26 touchdowns passes. Popson also rushed for 2,522 yards and scored 35 rushing touchdowns. He also played  linebacker his senior season.

Popson was named the NPF All-District 2 athlete in 2014 and was a first-team athlete for the Wyoming Valley Conference Big School all-stars. He was also named an honorable mention all-state athlete by the Pennsylvania Football News and an honorable mention offensive specialist by EasternPAFootball.com. Popson was a member of the WNEP Dream Team both his junior and senior seasons and continued his football career at Division 2 Bloomsburg University where he played wide receiver. He finished his career with  60 receptions for 831 yards for the Huskies.
