PLAINS – Davon Underwood produced 222 yards of total offense and 20 points Friday night as Wilkes-Barre defeated West Scranton, 35-2, in a non-league game.
Underwood carried 14 times for 157 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He took his only pass reception, a screen, 65 yards down the left sideline for a 27-0 lead with 4:51 left in the first half.
The win improved Wilkes-Barre to 2-3, ending a three-game losing streak. West Scranton remained winless through the midway point in the season.
“My team played great today,” Underwood said. “That’s what led up to the win. … My whole team in general played great.”
Wolfpack coach Ciro Cinto was particularly pleased with the defense, which allowed just six first downs and 100 yards total offense.
Wilkes-Barre never let West Scranton closer than the 25-yard line and got a touchdown from its defense.
Underwood picked up 24 and 23 yards on his first two carries, setting up his 2-yard touchdown to cap the first Wolfpack drive.
Wilkes-Barre then added 20 second-quarter points for a 27-0 halftime lead. Its three scores in the quarter came from 178 yards out.
Underwood ran 72 yards for a touchdown, Logan Sincavage returned an interception 41 yards and Underwood added the touchdown pass from Jake Howe.
Howe scored on a 1-yard sneak on the first play of the fourth quarter and the last 11:58 was played with the running clock of the Mercy Rule.
West Scranton broke the shutout after Adam Lake’s 59-yard punt pinned Wilkes-Barre at its 2.
On second-and-10, Shamier Lyons tackled Underwood in the end zone for a safety with 8:50 left.
Wilkes-Barre (2-3) will go on the road to visit Hazleton Area next Friday while West Scranton (0-5) travels to Mid Valley.
