VALLEY VIEW 20, WALLENPAUPACK 7

Valley View used a grinding running game and stout defense to defeat Wallenpaupack 20-7 on Senior Night at John Henzes Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Cougars overcame 12 penalites and 3 turnovers, but the defense answered the call all night, pitching a shutout until the last couple minutes of the game.

Valley View rushed for 289 yards and got rushing scores from Tyler Muchal, Brady Bachman, and Tristian Smith.

Wallenpaupack was held to 55 yards rushing on the evening.

After a three and out for Paupack on their opening drive, the Cougars put together a 12-play drive that lasted over six minutes, but had to punt the ball away coming up empty with no points.

The Buckhorns struggled to move the ball most of the first half as they only had two first downs. Quarterback Jake Rafferty threw an interception to Gavin Oprishko who returned it the Paupack 8 yardline. Two plays later, the Cougars would score on Muchal’s 2-yard run.

There would be no more scoring in the first half as Rafferty picked off Cougar quarterback Caleb Brown in the end zone to end a Valley View scoring threat.

The Cougars had almost a 2 to 1 advantage in time of possesions, but the penalties and turnovers kept stopping drives.

Valley View would get the second half kickoff and drive 61 yards with Bachman scoring from 2 yards out for a 13-0 lead. The drive took 6:19 off the third quarter clock.

In the late third quarter, each team kept giving the ball to the other. Brown threw his second INT of the game. Wallenpaupack  would fumble the ball away on the next drive and Valley View returned the favor with a fumble on their next drive.

After a Wallenpaupack punt, the Cougars would put the game away led by Smith’s 63 yard run to the Buckhorns five yardline. He would take it into the end zone on the next play for a 20-0 lead.

Wallenpaupack would get a late score when Rafferty found Ed Kiesendahl in the end zone for a 9-yard pass.

Valley View secured the No. 2 seed in Class 4A and will host Dallas next Friday, a rematch of last year’s District 2 title game. Wallenpaupack will probably play in the Eastern Conference next weekend with a probable opponent being rival Honesdale.
