SCRANTON 14, POCONO MT. WEST 7
At Pocono Mountain West, the Scranton Knights held off a late charge by the home team to post a key non-league win in their opener, 14-7. The Knights’ Reece Whitman intercepted a desperation pass by Pocono Mountain West as time expired, sealing the win for Coach Steve Shumbres and the Knights.
In a game dominated statistically by Scranton, both teams struggled to score. The Knights were hampered by penalties and untimely dropped passes from the arm of Brody Coyle, Scranton’s junior quarterback. The Knights finally broke into the scoring column as senior speedster Jalonte Weeks motored 50 yards for the game’s opening score early in the second quarter. Unfortunately for Scranton, Weeks suffered an ankle injury and was unable to return to action in the second half.
The Knights brought their 7-0 lead to the locker room at halftime. The teams played a scoreless third stanza. With 7:30 remaining in the football game, Pocono Mountain West was stopped on a 4th and goal from the 3-yard line, only to have the ball fumbled into the endzone where West covered it for their only score, tying the game.
Scranton took the ensuing kickoff and marched 70 yards, with the drive capped off by a 7-yard ramble from tailback Reece Whitman. But Whitman’s heroics were not finished. West drove the ball to Scranton’s 30-yard line where they called timeout with 0.2 seconds remaining in the contest. It was then that Whitman cradled the errant pass as time expired, preserving the win for the Knights.
Scranton limited the effectiveness of the Pocono Mountain offense all evening long, getting stalwart performances from interior lineman Dyjeere Weekes, as well as from senior linebackers, Pat Whelan and Matt Carrera.
The Knights will attempt to remain unbeaten next week when they play host to Wyoming Valley West.
