WILKES-BARRE 42, WILLIAMSPORT 14
Jake Howe claimed the Wyoming Valley Conference record for career passing yards Friday night while leading Wilkes-Barre past visiting Williamsport, 42-14, for the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional title.
The victory avenged a 28-21 loss on the same field just two weeks earlier. It sends the Wolfpack (8-4) into state play against District 6 champion State College (9-2).
Howe surpassed the 7,000-yard mark last week, then moved past Berwick’s Ron Powlus, the previous record-holder with more than 7,300 yards, Friday night.
The four-year starting quarterback accounted for five touchdowns. Howe was 16-for-29 for 231 yards and three touchdowns while running 11 times for 63 yards and two more scores.
Davon Underwood also had a pair of touchdowns for Wilkes-Barre.
Howe hit Underwood with a swing pass that became a 32-yard touchdown and also scored on a 1-yard run for a 14-0 lead with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
The Wolfpack sandwiched Underwood’s 5-yard run and a 20-yard Howe touchdown pass to Kevon Creech around a 2-yard touchdown run by Williamsport quarterback Tevin Williams for a 28-7 halftime lead.
Wilkes-Barre moved the game into the Mercy Rule when Howe ran 14 yards for a score then found Treyvon Gembitski for a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 42-7 lead with 5:23 left in the third quarter.
Gembitski also contributed an interception.
The Wolfpack defense cut Williamsport’s scoring in half from two weeks ago and nearly did the same in total offense, limiting the Millionaires to 174 yards.
