MID VALLEY 38, WESTERN WAYNE 0
Mid Valley stayed within one game of division leading Lakeland by blanking Western Wayne 38-0, setting up a battle for league honors with the Chiefs in the season’s climactic final weekend. The Spartans moved to 4-5 on the season.
Steady quarterback Brett Yanoski threw for two scores and ran for another to lead the Spartans to the victory. Yanoski opened the scoring with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter when he found Rhys Williams alone for a 7-yard touchdown strike. Paxton Grebb’s point after gave Mid Valley a 7-0 lead.
Mid Valley’s next two touchdowns came on the ground. With less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter, Rob Mattioli bulled over from 2 yards away. Grebb was on the money once again to make it 14-0.
In the second period, Yanoski used his scrambling ability to add another score to the Spartans’ total, racing 7 yards to the end zone. The point after provided Mid-Valley with a 21-0 cushion as the teams headed to the intermission.
The third quarter showcased the big-play ability of the Spartan offense. First, Yanoski connected with Aiden Willson on a pretty pitch and catch that covered 51 yards. Later in the period, speedy back Mason Vinansky eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the campaign by jetting 95 yards for the Spartans’ longest play from scrimmage on the season. Grebb’s point after put the game in the mercy rule with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter.
Grebb added the finishing touches on the big win for the Spartans by booting a 35-yard field goal with less than a minute left to play in the football game, making the final count 38-0.
As mentioned above, the Spartans will head to Chapman Lake next weekend to face off against Lakeland and attempt to gain a share of the division title. Western Wayne, now 2-7, will complete their season by hosting Dunmore.
