SCRANTON 51, WEST SCRANTON 6

In the annual Bell Game featuring Scranton’s two remaining city public schools, the Knights of Scranton ran roughshod over the Invaders of West Scranton to even their record at 2-2. West fell to 1-3 on the season.

The teams traded punches during the first quarter before the Knights were able to get on the scoreboard for the first time. Quarterback Brody Coyle rolled to his left and ran untouched into the corner of the end zone to give Scranton a 7-0 advantage with 6:04 remaining in the opening quarter.

While it looked as though the Invaders were going to keep the game within one score, Scranton broke the game open at the end of the second quarter by scoring two late touchdowns. First, fleet-footed Kamani Sterling accounted for the final 24 yards of a Knight scoring drive. After carrying tacklers with him on the way to a 23-yard scamper to the one-yard line, Sterling covered the final yard to give Scranton a 14-0 lead with 3:49 left before halftime. The Knights were quickly able to regain possession and marched to the Invader 15-yard line with less than a minute left in the half. From there, Coyle used his accurate arm to find Ben Campbell down the right sideline with just 53 seconds remaining. The extra point sent the teams to the locker rooms with Scranton ahead, 21-0.

The Knights quickly added to their already considerable lead when Coyle notched his second rushing touchdown of the evening, this time coming on a quarterback sneak with 8:57 left in the third quarter. The extra point made it 28-0 Knights.

The Invaders showed some resilience on a drive during the third quarter. Quarterback Jake DeLuca spotted speedy Jonyae Sostrae in the middle of the endzone with 4:52 left in the third quarter. The snap was bobbled and the point was unsuccessful, leaving the Knights with a 28-6 cushion.

From there it was all Scranton. The Knights scored three rushing touchdowns in 10 minutes to blow the game wide open. The first of those tallies came with 1:27 left in the third frame when Jon Mrokiz rumbled four yards to put the Knights up 35-6. On their very next possession, it was burly Keith Johnson scoring for Scranton from a yard out. With 10:20 left in the football game, Scranton put the game into the mercy rule situation with a 42-6 lead.

The Scranton defense got into the scoring column with 7:33 left in the contest when Daris McCollum collared Invader quarterback DeLuca for a safety. The scoreboard read 44-6 in favor of Scranton with 7:33 left in the game. The Knights concluded the night’s festivities when Ian McAndrew sprinted 49 yards for the score. The extra point made it 51-6, allowing Scranton High School to maintain possession of the Bell for another campaign.

Scranton will travel to Dunmore High School to face divisional rival Scranton Prep next Friday night. West Scranton will host WVC 6A power Wilkes-Barre at Valor Field at Scranton Memorial Stadium.
