WEST SCRANTON 20, OLD FORGE 7
Coaches preach that winning the turnover battle is the key to winning football games. But it’s what you do with that turnover that counts.
Sophomore cornerback Kaz Colbert returned an interception 88 yards in the third quarter to break a 7-7 tie and propel West Scranton to 20-7 victory on the road over Old Forge at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The win broke a 12-game losing streak for the Invaders and gave Coach Jake Manetti a victory in his homecoming game at his alma mater.
The West defense set up its first score, forcing a three and out on the first Old Forge series.
After a 14-yard punt by the Blue Devils, senior Dayron Groves capped a six-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run to put the Invaders ahead 7-0 with 6:48 left in the opening stanza.
Old Forge struggled on offense for most of the game but its defense held West in check as Monty Fausnaught stopped two drives with interceptions for the Blue Devils.
Will Wozniak put Old Forge on the board when he blocked a Cayden Farr punt in the endzone and then recovered the loose ball to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:03 left in the half.
Neither team threatened until Old Forge put together a 14-play, 80-yard drive in the third quarter. But on fourth-and-4, Colbert stepped in front of a Robby Solfanelli pass intended for Chris Rasmus and took it to the house.
Old Forge had two more possessions but the West defense held before the offense put the game away with a nine play, 40-yard drive that finished on a Jake DeLuca to Farr six-yard scoring toss out of a timeout to increase the lead to 20-7.
Groves finished with 75 yards on 22 carries to lead the West offense. Wideout Quincy Mosley hauled in seven passes for 52 yards.
Sophomore Rylan Gutowski rushed for 55 yards in 18 carries for the Blue Devils and Rasmus caught five passes for 29 yards.
