STROUDSBURG 28, WALLENPAUPACK 7

For one half Friday night, Stroudsburg and Wallenpaupack were locked in a tight season opener. But when the Mountaineers came out of the locker room after halftime, they looked like a different team.

Stroudsburg broke open a 7-7 tie with three unanswered touchdowns in the final two quarters to earn a 28-7 victory over Wallenpaupack at home, starting their 2025 campaign with a statement win.

The Mountaineers struck first in the second quarter on an 11-yard rushing touchdown, but the Buckhorns answered when quarterback C.J. Doty connected with Ryan Vargo on a 12-yard scoring strike to even the game before halftime.

That would be the last time Wallenpaupack found the end zone.

Stroudsburg took control in the third quarter when its ground game delivered a stunning 72-yard touchdown run, electrifying the home crowd and giving the Mountaineers a 14-7 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers added insurance with a 54-yard touchdown pass, then capped the night with a bruising 2-yard run to put the game out of reach.

Defensively, Stroudsburg clamped down after intermission, holding the Buckhorns scoreless over the final 24 minutes. The Mountaineers also won the battle up front, finishing with 15 first downs to Wallenpaupack’s 11 and committing just four penalties for 18 yards.

With the win, Stroudsburg starts the season 1-0 and will take momentum into next week’s matchup against Wilkes-Barre. Wallenpaupack, now 0-1, will look to rebound when it meets East Stroudsburg North.
