ABINGTON HEIGHTS 49, SCRANTON 13

CLARKS SUMMIT – Abington Heights took advantage of short fields Thursday night to score on all six first-half possessions on the way to the Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 victory over Scranton on Homecoming.

Jayden Anglin ran for three touchdowns n the first 19:10 to help the Comets to a 42-0 halftime lead.

Strong efforts by the defense and special teams allowed the Comets to start their average first-half possession at the Knights 40. They began four drives in Scranton territory and the others at their 43 and 44.

The defense held Scranton to minus-11 yards rushing in the first half when only one of the 23 plays by the Knights resulted in more than five yards.

The first four touchdowns came on drives that took less than two minutes.

The Comets needed to go just 32 yards for the first score, three Anglin runs for 16 yards, then a 16-yard Noah Kayal-to-Evan Keiper, who made the touchdown catch while falling to his back in the end zone.

Five straight runs and two Scranton penalties produced Anglin’s first touchdown, a 5-yard score for a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

Cayd Sespico’s rush led to Anglin’s interception at the Scranton 23.

Noah Kayal then scored from the 1 on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Scott Weiland recovered a mishandled kickoff for Abington Heights at the 26.

Kayal’s 23-yard run set up Anglin’s 1-yard touchdown for a 28-0 lead with 10:30 still remaining in the half.

Anglin returned a punt 30 yards, Kayal hit Gavin Anders twice for 31 yards and Anglin added his last score on a 20-yard run.

The Comets scored again in the final minute of the half when a 28-yard, Kayal-to-Anders pass on fourth down led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Anthony Severs.

Kamani Sterling broke the shutout with an 8-yard run in the third quarter and Ian McAndrew scored the other Scranton touchdown when he raced 60 yards for a score in the fourth.

Back-up quarterback Chris Bohn ran 8 yards for the only second-half score by the Comets.

Jack Hartshorn went 7-for-7 on extra points and had four touchbacks on kickoffs, including all three in the first quarter.

Abington Heights finished 4-2 in Division 1 and takes a 7-2 record into its non-league, regular-season finale at Hazleton Area (1-7).

Scranton is 0-5 and 2-7 going into its Thursday night regular-season finale at home against Delaware Valley (3-1, 4-4).
