RIVERSIDE 55, CARBONDALE AREA 7

Riverside scored early and often, led by the rushing of Charlie Anstett, and overwhelmed Carbondale Area 55-7. The Vikings, now 7-1, moved inexorably forward toward their date with Lackawanna Trail in Week 10 that will most certainly decide the championship of Division 3 of the Lackawanna Football Conference.

The Vikings played with a short field for the entire first half and certainly took advantage of those opportunities. Anstett was the first to hit paydirt for Riverside, scampering in from 15 yards out after Carbondale turned the ball over deep in their own territory. On the very next possession, the Chargers mishandled a punt snap and Riverside took over once again. This time it was Angel Grande doing the honors for Riverside on a 6-yard burst, making it 14-0 just minutes into the football game.

The Vikings’ defense, stellar all night long, forced another punt which was returned to the Charger 1-yard line. Quarterback Brayden Rose snuck in from there to make it 21-0.

The turnover bug continued to bite the Chargers as Riverside was able to step in front of another Carbondale pass, giving the Vikings possession at the Charger 35. Rose used his arm to garner the fourth score of the night for Riverside, connecting with Jaren Jackson on a 14-yard aerial. The extra point was unsuccessful and the Vikings led 27-0.

Carbondale Area continued to struggle with special teams early in the second quarter. A Charger punt was fielded by the versatile Rose who danced 45 yards toward his second touchdown of the contest. The score was 34-0 early in the second period.

On their very next possession, it was Anstett who notched the big play for the Vikings’ offense. The shifty back bounced 54 yards through the Carbondale Area defense to make the score 41-0, a lead the Vikings took to the locker room at halftime, ensuring the second half would be played under the mercy rule.

Carbondale Area’s lone touchdown came in the third period. Caedon Voglino hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass to make the score 41-7. Riverside finished out the contest with scoring runs by Carmelo Barnett and one more by Anstett to make the final score 55-7.

Next weekend, the Vikings play host to traditional rival, Old Forge, while Carbondale Area, now 4-4, will visit Susquehanna next Saturday afternoon.
