LAKELAND 35, WEST SCRANTON 14

Standout senior quarterback David Naniewicz tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another and Lakeland scored the first 35 points of the game on their way to a convincing 35-14 victory over West Scranton. The Chiefs moved to 8-1 on the year and took another step toward clinching a Lackawanna Football Conference Division 2 title.

Lakeland got two touchdowns late in the first quarter to jump on top of the Invaders. Naniewicz took the snap from center and twisted 9 yards for the first Lakeland touchdown of the evening. The extra point made it 7-0 with 1:54 left in the first period.

The Chiefs quickly got the ball back and Naniewicz found Jackson Pochas across the middle of the football field. The receiver outraced the Invader defensive backs to the end zone to make it 14-0 with only seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Without any scoring in the second quarter, the teams went to the locker rooms with the Chiefs on top 14-0.

The Chiefs used the big play in the third quarter to put the game away. Once again, it was the familiar combination of Naniewicz to Pochas that delivered for Lakeland. On a screen pass, Naniewicz found Pochas in the middle of the field and the receiver then sprinted to the sideline to complete the scoring pass. The extra point made it 21-0 with 2:53 left in the 3^rd period.

On the next West Scranton possession, Rocco Spataro stepped in front of a West Scranton pass and raced 40 yards down the right sideline to make it 28-0. Naniewicz followed with his final scoring toss of the night on the next Lakeland drive, this time finding familiar target Chase Rosenkrans in the middle of the field from 17 yards out to complete the Chiefs’ scoring.

West Scranton managed two touchdowns in the final quarter after the mercy rule went into effect. Dayron Groves scores on a 15-yard scoring jaunt with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter. Then, Josef Lloyd hit receiver Kaz Colbert, who made a diving catch in the right corner of the end zone from 32 yards away to make the final score 35-14.

The Chiefs will attempt to finish off their run to an outright league championship next weekend when they close their schedule by hosting Mid-Valley, which only has one league loss. West Scranton will travel to Honesdale on Friday to finish out their regular season schedule.
