LACKAWANNA TRAIL 54, SUSQUEHANNA 14

SUSQUEHANNA – With Isaac Ryon leading the way, Lackawanna Trail scored on more than half its first-half offensive plays on the way to the rout of host Susquehanna in Saturday afternoon’s Lackawanna Football Conference Division 3 game.

The defending champions and division co-leaders needed just 11 plays to score six offensive touchdowns. Ryon ran for three of those scores and added a kickoff return for a fourth touchdown as the Lions opened a 48-6 advantage with 3:47 left in the second quarter.

Ryon carried five times, all in the first half, for 188 yards.

Sean Dwyer added 72 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries.

“The key to our success is being able to spread the ball around on offense,” Lions coach Steve Jervis said. “Isaac is obviously an extremely talented player, but we’re being able to utilize all facets of our offense.

“Defensively, we’re limiting the big explosive plays. Special teams wise, we’ve been doing a good job of controlling the battle of field position. So, overall, we’re happy right where we’re at.”

The Lions improved to 3-0 in Division 3 to share the lead with Riverside, which they will meet in the regular-season finale. They are also 7-1 overall and leading the race for the top seed in the District 2-11 Class A Subregional playoffs.

“We always say we want to be playing our best football in November and we’re right on track to do that,” Jervis said.

Lackawanna Trail misplayed the first of Susquehanna’s six first-half punts, delaying its first possession, but held the Sabers to minus-10 net yards in a pair of three-and-outs.

Dwyer went 46 yards untouched on the team’s second offensive play.

Ryon ran 60 yards on the next Lackawanna Trail offensive play for a second score in less than two minutes.

Dwyer’s 18-yard run and Ryon’s conversion made it 20-0 at the quarter.

Ryon scored on 50- and 65-yard runs, then Anthony Paolucci and Kaylix Douglas tackled the punter at the 1 before he could get the ball away.

Standout lineman Owens took advantage of a chance to step into the backfield, scoring from there on the next play.

Gabe Maby’s 33-yard run led to Ryan Hobart scoring from the 25 on the next play as Susquehanna broke the shutout.

Ryon then returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a score and the 48-6 lead.

Susquehanna avoided beginning the second half under the Mercy Rule when Caedon Stone found Mason Keyes behind the defense on fourth-and-13 for a 65-yard touchdown. Stone ran for the two-pointer with 12 seconds left in the second quarter to cut the halftime deficit to 48-14.

The running clock rules began with 3:49 left in the third quarter after Lucas Filipek passed 26 yards to Hayden Reed to close the scoring.

Both teams are home in divisional games next week. The Lions play Holy Cross (1-2, 3-5) Friday night.

Susquehanna (0-3, 0-8) faces Carbondale (1-2, 4-4) Saturday.
