HONESDALE 19, EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH 9

Honesdale overcame a 9-point halftime deficit on the road at East Stroudsburg North en route to a 19-9 opening night win. The Hornets were able to post the first win of the George Howanitz era at Honesdale as the long time Valley View mentor was successful in his first outing as head man at a new venue.

After the Timberwolves kicked a 38-yard field goal by Jayden Ramos and scored a rushing touchdown by QB Wayne King on their ensuing possession, the Hornets, using a Delaware Wing-T formation were not able to crack the scoreboard in the first half and trailed 9-0 at intermission.

The second half was an entirely different story. The Hornets were able to use the swift feet and long strides of senior wingback, Kobe White, and the powerful inside running of fullback Damian Davis to control the clock and field position. After recovering a fumbled pitch deep in North territory, the Hornets tallied when Kobe White scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 13-yard sweep to the left corner of the end zone. The Hornets attempted a 2-point conversion which was unsuccessful, cutting the North advantage to 9-6.

Later in the third quarter, White took an inside handoff from quarterback Abe Bryant and raced right down the middle of the field untouched from 30 yards away. This time, the Hornets attempted a traditional extra point which was also unsuccessful, holding their lead to 12-9 after three quarters of play.

The final quarter saw one more score from the Hornets as White powered in from 5 yards away for his third score of the night. This time, the extra point was good, making the score 19-9, and giving Howanitz his first victory at Honesdale.

Honesdale will once again face a team from the Pocono region next week when they open their home schedule against Pocono Mountain East.
