Jake Howe accounted for five touchdowns on the night of his latest milestone as the four-year quarterback led Wilkes-Barre back into the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional final with a 46-20 victory over visiting Hazleton Area Friday night.
Howe passed for three touchdowns, ran for two and surpassed 7,000 career yards through the air.
Davon Underwood caught two of the three touchdown passes while scoring four touchdowns overall for Wilkes-Barre.
The Wolfpack (7-4) advanced into the championship game where it will try to avenge losses to Williamsport (6-5) on the same field last week and in last year’s subregional championship game.
Howe went 15-for-20 for 279 yards passing.
Underwood’s 6-yard touchdown run gave the Wolfpack a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
Quarterback J.J. Lantigua ran 15 yards to pull the Cougars within 7-6 midway through the second quarter, but Howe and Underwood combined for the game’s next five touchdowns as part of 39 unanswered points.
Underwood scored on a 30-yard pass and Howe on a 3-yard run for a 21-6 halftime lead.
Howe hit Underwood, then each ran for a touchdown in the third quarter. The Wolfpack run culminated in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Howe to Jonathan Otway-Kellom on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Xavier Heck, who ran for 139 yards, and Austin Karlick ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns for Hazleton Area, which finished 1-10.
