RIVERSIDE 34, HANOVER AREA 31
Jared Jackson and Brayden Rose helped Riverside build 21-point leads in the second and third quarters Friday night before the state-ranked Vikings held off a late upset bid to defeat visiting Hanover Area, 34-31, in a non-league game.
Hanover Area freshman Angel Tejada intercepted two passes in the first quarter. He turned the second into a 100-yard touchdown return to put the Hawkeyes up 7-0 after one.
Rose and Jackson each had a hand in multiple touchdowns as Riverside ran off 28 straight points in the first 7½ minutes of the second quarter.
Jackson scored on a 75-yard pass from Rose and returned an interception for another score.
Rose hit Tyler Grill with a 15-yard touchdown pass and also scored on a 1-yard run.
Hanover Area closed within 28-12 at halftime on a 25-yard Dawin Downey run.
Carmelo Barnett ran 45 yards for a score on the first play of the second half to give Riverside a 34-13 lead.
Hanover Area managed to make things interesting.
Brody Richardson ran 4 yards for a score late in the third quarter, Dewayne Downey scored on an 11-yard run in the middle of the fourth and Logan Richardson found Davin Downey for a 46-yard score with 2:03 left.
Riverside, which is ranked third in the state in Class 2A by pennlive.com, has a pair of three-point victories going into another home game. The Vikings face Lakeland, another 2-0 team, Friday night.
Hanover Area (0-2) is at Holy Cross (1-1) Saturday at 1 p.m.
