DUNMORE 35, WESTERN WAYNE 14
The Dunmore Bucks raced into the District 2 Class 2A playoffs with a convincing 35-14 victory over Western Wayne to finish their regular season at 7-3, setting up a rematch with Riverside, the team that dropped them 17-14 in Week 1.
Ryan Mecca, one of a trio of Bucks’ running backs who did damage on this night got Dunmore on the board with 6:21 left to play in the opening quarter with a 3-yard scoring carry.
The Wildcats, who finished their season at 2-8, battled all night long to stay with the Bucks. Western Wayne managed to tie the game with just seconds remaining in the first stanza when Austin Elias skipped 9 yards for the score.
Dunmore was able to provide themselves with a more comfortable lead in the second quarter. Brandon Mecca bowled over from the 2 to extend the Bucks’ lead to 14-7. Then, on their next possession, Dunmore utilized the passing of Weston Yannone, who found Logan Miller open from 19 yards away. The Bucks took a 21-7 lead into the locker room.
The first two scores of the second half also belonged to Dunmore as the Bucks put the game away. Brandon Mecca notched his second short touchdown carry of the evening when he once again hit paydirt from 2 yards away. Then, it was the Dunmore defense that contributed when Xavier Burke intercepted a Western Wayne pass and sprinted 49 yards to the end zone, giving Dunmore an insurmountable 35-7 edge in the early stages of the final quarter.
Western Wayne was able to tally one more time when Jason Sparks carried the football in from 5 yards away, making the final score 35-14.
The Bucks will travel to Taylor next weekend to face a familiar foe in division rival, Riverside in the Class 2A semifinals.
