DUNMORE 27, RIVERSIDE 7

Dual-threat quarterback Weston Yannone passed and ran his Dunmore Bucks to a 27-7 thumping of Riverside in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals. The win by the Bucks avenged their 17-14 loss to the Vikings back in Week 1 and will send Dunmore to Lakeland next weekend to vie for the district crown.

The Bucks got on the board first courtesy of the big play capability of Yannone. The fleet junior signal-caller broke through the Riverside line and raced 72 yards for his first rushing touchdown of the evening. The extra point made it 7-0 Dunmore with 2:53 remaining in the opening period.

In the second quarter, Yannone found receiver Jacob Costanzo with a short pass on the left sideline. Costanzo weaved his way to the middle of the field and then down the far side line, only to be tackled inside the 5-yard line, completed the 74-yard pass and run. Yannone then dove into the endzone from the 1, making it 14-0 with 7:08 left to play before intermission.

The Bucks were able to put the football game away in the third quarter with help from their defense. After a Dunmore drive was stalled on a fumble deep in Riverside territory, the Vikings returned the favor as Jackson Harding scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 9 yards for the touchdown that made it 20-0 with 7:58 left in the quarter.

Dunmore’s final score came via the legs of tailback Ryan Mecca. Mecca broke three tackles near the line of scrimmage and then sprinted down the right sideline to the endzone for a 60-yard touchdown carry. The point after gave Dunmore a 27-0 lead with 5:52 still to play in the third quarter.

The Vikings were able to avert the shutout when Charlie Anstett notched a 5-yard touchdown carry with less than a minute remaining in the football game.

The Bucks improved their record to 8-3 on the season while Riverside, losing their second consecutive game at home by decisive scores, completes their campaign with a record of 8-3.
