Recap
CARBONDALE 32, SUSQUEHANNA 13
By Tom Robinson
SUSQUEHANNA – Sophomore Nick Zaccone accounted for the game’s first four touchdowns in his first start at quarterback Saturday to fuel Carbondale’s 32-13 Lackawanna Football Conference Division 3 victory at Susquehana.
Zaccone’s 1-yard run was the only score of the first quarter. His first pass was intercepted, but his next four connected for 78 yards and three touchdowns.
“I’m happy with the way the offensive line played,” Chargers coach Jeff Arthur said. “We started another quarterback today. I thought he had a nice day for his first start.”
Zaccone threw scoring passes of 18 and 8 yards to Caedon Voglino in the second quarter for a 19-0 halftime lead.
David Myers pulled in a 24-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to make it 25-0.
Susquehanna, which ran out of time at the Carbondale 4 at the end of the first half, scored twice in less than three minutes to pull within 25-13 midway through the fourth quarter.
Gabe Maby ran 2 yards for the score, then Christopher Serra returned an interception 14 yards for a touchdown.
Francisco Roman, who ran for 106 yards on 21 carries, put the game away for Carbondale. He ran 30 yards on the first play after Serra’s touchdown, starting a drive that he capped with a 5-yard touchdown with 2:55 left.
“We had a nice day from a couple kids who stepped up,” Arthur said. “And, Frank Roman is the heart and soul of our team.
“He gets us going early with some nice runs and then we’re able to play-action off of him and that’s open.”
Carbondale is 2-2 in LFC Division 3 and 5-4 overall going into Friday’s game at Old Forge (2-2, 2-7) to decide third place in the division. The Chargers are seventh in the District 2 Class 3A race where teams just learned last week that only four playoff spots, rather than eight, are available this year, meaning they are likely to miss out in a close race.
“We got some bad news in Week 8 that they trimmed the district down to four teams,” Arthur said. “We’ll be excited if we can represent our school in the Eastern Conference.”
Susquehanna (0-4, 0-9) is at Holy Cross (0-4,3-6) Saturday afternoon to see which team can avoid the basement and whether the Sabers can avoid a winless season.
