The Williamsport defensive unit remained unscored-upon and produced a touchdown Friday night while leading the Millionaires to a 23-6, non-league victory over host Hazleton Area in a meeting of former division rivals.

Williamsport is in its first season in the Heartland Conference after three decades of competing in the Wyoming Valley Conference in football only.

Hazleton Area’s only touchdown came on a 95-yard kickoff return by Riley VanGilst in the second quarter.

The Cougars drove the ball on their first possession, but fumbled.

Williamsport drove up the field for a field goal to open the scoring.

The Millionaires increased their lead to 10-0 on the next drive before VanGilst’s return.

Stanley Tidwell’s 11-yard interception return increased the lead to 17-6 before halftime.
