Junior wide receiver Treyvon Gembitski scored three touchdowns to lead the Wilkes-Barre Wolfpack to a 35-0 win over Wyoming Valley West Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium in Kingston. With the win, the Wolfpack retain the Bridge Trophy for the cross-river rivals, for the 6th consecutive year.
Gembitski got Wilkes-Barre on the board first in the second quarter, with a 35 yard touchdown catch from senior QB Jake Howe. Just a couple possessions later, with the Spartans forced to punt on fourth down, Gembitski fielded a punt near the right hash mark on a dead sprint and raced 35 yards for the score to give the Wolfpack a 14-0 lead at halftime.
The Wolfpack put the game away in the third quarter, with Gembitski’s third score, a 44 yard touchdown grab, sandwiched in between a Declan Gregor four-yard touchdown grab and a one-yard pound by Howe on a QB keeper. That gave Howe three touchdowns passes and one running score for the day.
The Spartans had a couple opportunities in the first half to keep the game within at least one score. Immediately following Gembitski’s punt return TD, Valley West drove deep into Wolfpack territory on 37-yard run by junior Preston Sninsky. That drive was halted by an interception a couple plays later.
Then, on the Spartans’ next possession, they were forced to punt, but a mishandled return gave Valley West the ball at the Wilkes-Barre 38. But they were unable to take advantage, giving the ball back on downs, four plays later.
Wilkes-Barre (4-4 overall, 2-2) will back in action next Friday host Crestwood. Wyoming Valley West (0-8, 0-4) visits Valley View in a non-conference game.
