Jake Howe passed for 297 yards and connected with Treyvon Gembitski for a pair of first-half touchdowns Friday night while leading Wilkes-Barre Area to a 27-3 victory over visiting Whitehall in the season opener for both teams.

Whitehall is the defending District 11 Class 5A champion.

The game was scoreless until past the midway point in the second quarter when Gembitski took a slant pass from Howe, worked his way into the middle of the field, and fought his way into the end zone despite six defenders making contact with him in the secondary.

Howe found Gembitski with another slant pass for a more routine, 10-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead in the last two minutes of the half.

The Zephyrs went back down the field, beating the clock for a field goal before halftime.
Davon Underwood’s 4-yard run off right tackle gave the Wolfpack a 20-3 lead late in the third quarter.
Gene Ardo’s ran 3 yards for the last Wilkes-Barre Area touchdown, making it a 27-3 lead with 11:17 remaining.
