WESTERN WAYNE 42, WEST SCRANTON 16

At Scranton Memorial Stadium, unbeaten Western Wayne kept West Scranton winless by showcasing a balanced attack en route to a convincing 42-16 victory.

The Cats struck quickly when star tailback Josh Vinton bulled over from a yard out to give Western Wayne an early 7-0 lead, less than a minute into the football game.

West Scranton showed signs of keeping the game competitive when place kicker Brian Barbosa was on the mark from 36 yards out to cut the Wildcat lead to 7-3. Those hopes were dashed quickly when, on their very next possession, Western Wayne hit paydirt once again. Quarterback John Pyatt connected with talented wideout Sean Owens who took a short pass and scooted 35 yards down the left sideline to make the score 14-3 after a quarter of play.

The Wildcats mounted a sustained march on their next possession and reached the end zone when Vinton notched his second scoring run of the night, this time from 14 yards away about halfway through the second period, making the score 21-3.

Disaster struck the Invaders when, on their very next drive, quarterback Jake DeLuca was intercepted and Jak Hubinger went 40 yards untouched on the return. That made the score 28-3 with 2:35 left before halftime.

The Wildcats were able to reach the end zone once more before intermission as Pyatt tossed his second scoring aerial of the ball game, this one on a diving 22-yard catch by Lance Maiocco. That send the teams to the locker rooms with Western Wayne enjoying a comfortable 35-3 advantage.

Prior to emptying their bench, the Wildcats scored once more as Sean Owens tallied for the second time, this one on a 35-yard reverse. With Western Wayne now leading by a 42-3 margin, the mercy rule went into effect.

The final two touchdowns of the evening were scored by West Scranton, both coming on touchdown passes by Jake DeLuca. His first went to Quincy Mosley from 39 yards out with 5:57 left in the third quarter. The second found the hands of Caiden Farr on another long pass of 35 yards with 1:38 remaining in the third frame. That concluding the scoring for the evening, giving Western Wayne a 42-16 victory.

Western Wayne (7-0 overall, 2-0)  will put their unblemished record on the line next Friday night when they host to Lakeland. West Scranton (0-7, 0-2) will be home again against traditional rival Dunmore.
