WESTERN WAYNE 49. HONESDALE 20

At Honesdale, Western Wayne tailback Josh Vinton continued to cement his legacy as one of the finest backs in District 2 with a 5-touchdown, 250-yard virtuoso performance as the Wildcats stayed unbeaten by routing Honesdale 49-20. Vinton, now with 17 touchdowns and over 1100 yards rushing on the year was unstoppable as the Wildcats parlayed two early Hornet turnovers into a huge lead.

The Hornets, backed up in their own end on their first drive, lost the football when a shotgun snap sailed over the head of quarterback Aiden Collins and was recovered by Western Wayne at the 4-yard line. Vinton got his first tally of the evening from a yard out to put the Wildcats in the lead 7-0 less than a minute and a half into the game.

Honesdale lost another fumble on their next possession and the script remained unchanged. 7 plays later, Vinton rumbled in from 6 yards away to make it 14-0 for the unbeaten Cats.

The Hornets then mounted their best drive of the evening. Keeping the football for 12 plays, Honesdale got on the board on a 1-yard sneak by Collins to cut the Wildcat lead to 14-7.

Western Wayne was quick to answer. Using the legs of their stalwart senior back, the Wildcats got Vinton’s third touchdown of the game, this one from 23 yards away to make the score 21-7. Then, Western Wayne topped off the scoring in the first half by marching 84 yards in just six plays. Unsurprisingly, Vinton tallied his fourth touchdown of the half by rolling 11 yards to paydirt. The halftime score was 28-7, largely because of 160 first half rushing yards by Vinton.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Vinton finished his touchdown spree by bulling over from 2 yards away, extending the Wildcat lead to 35-7. Later in the third stanza, quarterback John Pyatt tossed his 6^th touchdown toss of the season to feature target, Sean Owens. The play covered 21 yards and the mercy rule was in effect at 42-7.

Early in the 4^th quarter, Honesdale stopped the string of 28 consecutive Wildcat points when halfback Mason Avery zoomed through the Western Wayne defense on a 26-yard touchdown jaunt to make it 42-14.

The teams traded late touchdowns, one on a 3-yard burst by Western Wayne’s R.J. Walton and the other on a 7-yard sprint from Honesdale’s Wyatt Avery, to make the final score 49-20.

Western Wayne (6-0, 1-0) will look to stretch their winning streak to seven games next weekend when they visit West Scranton in a divisional matchup. Honesdale (2-4), now losers of 4 straight after winning their first two games of the year, will travel to Chapman Lake to face off with the Lakeland Chiefs.
