ABINGTON HEIGHTS 41, WALLENPAUPACK 0
At Clarks Summit, the Abington Heights Comets used big nights from quarterback Nick Bradley and receivers Shane Brower and Shawn Theodore to dominate Wallenpaupack by a score of 41-0.
After a scoreless first quarter, Abington Heights drove 68 yards in 12 plays keyed by a 23-yard pass from Bradley to Gavin Anders that moved the ball inside the Buckhorn red zone for the first time all evening. Bradley eventually snuck over from the 1, the first of his three touchdowns on the night. The extra point was blocked and the Comets led 6-0 with 10:07 left in the second quarter.
After forcing a Wallenpaupack punt, the Comets mounted a 65-yard drive that highlighted the combination of Bradley to Brower. Twice on the drive, Bradley hooked up with Brower for first down completions to set Abington Heights up in Buckhorn territory. Bradley scooted the final 17 yards for the score. Jack Farrell’s kick made it 13-0 Comets with 3:31 left to play before halftime.
But still the Comets were not finished. After another Buckhorn punt, Bradley found Brower once again, this time on a 40-yard pitch and catch to the Wallenpaupack 25-yard line. Shortly thereafter, Bradley carried the ball over from 4 yards out with just 13 seconds remaining before intermission, sending the teams to the locker rooms with Abington Heights leading 20-0.
The recipe for Comet success did not change at all in the second half. Abington Heights took the second half kickoff and put together a time-consuming scoring drive. On 3rd and 6, from the Wallenpaupack 34, Bradley found Brower for 17 yards and a first down. Bradley tossed his first touchdown pass of the night as he connected with Gavin Anders for 3 yards. With 6:11 left in the third frame, the Comets led 27-0.
Rocco Serafinko stepped forward for the Comet defense, stopping a Buckhorn drive by intercepting a Devyn Kiesendahl aerial and returning it 30 yards to his own 43-yard line. 11 plays later, the junior signal caller, Bradley, connected with Shawn Theodore on a 13-yard scoring pass. Farrell’s extra point made it 34-0. Key plays on the drive were another Bradley to Theodore pass on 4th and 5 that covered 11 yards. Tailback Dom Vergnetti had a 17-yard burst that put the football on the 14-yard line shortly before the touchdown pass.
The Comets scored a final touchdown on a scoring run late in the fourth quarter by Tyler Sacks, making the final 41-0.
Bradley threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns while running for three more.
Abington Heights (4-4 overall, 2-3) travels to Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium inext weekend to face the Knights in a divisional matchup while Wallenpaupack (3-5, 1-4) will attempt to end their losing skid when they visit Pittston Area in an interleague contest.
