SCRANTON 36, WYOMING VALLEY WEST 13

The Scranton offense flexed its muscle at home, scoring touchdowns on their first five offensive possessions en route to a 36-13 win over Wyoming Valley West Friday night.

Junior quarterback Brody Coyle was the first to find the end zone, taking a QB keeper off left tackle for a 22-yard touchdown run on the Knights’ opening drive.

Coyle hit junior Reece Whitman with an eight-yard touchdown pass on Scranton’s next possession and a two-point conversion made it 15-0 before the end of the first quarter.

Scranton got two more rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Coyle’s second of the night came on a three-yard plunge, and Memphis Shotto added a 31-yard score to make it 29-0 with 5:24 remaining in the first half.

Late in the second quarter, the Knights were driving for the touchdown to give them a 35-point lead and trigger the running clock, but the Spartans’ defense held them to a 32-yard field goal attempt which was blocked. So it appeared Wyoming Valley West had avoided the mercy rule before the half. But the Spartans lost the handle on the very next play and gave the ball back to Scranton on the five yard line. Whitman scored one play later and Scranton was up 36-0 at halftime.

In the second half, with the running mercy-rule clock, Wyoming Valley West did add a couple offensive highlights, as freshman quarterback Damian Eastman hit senior wideout Ty Mattis with a pair of touchdown passes.
