LACKAWANNA TRAIL 49, SUSQUEHANNA 12
By Tom Robinson
CLINTON TWP. – Logan Edwards delivered the gut punch to Susquehanna Friday night with a little help from his friends in the middle of the Lackawanna Trail offensive line.
Edwards turned five fullback gut traps into 155 yards and a touchdown while helping the Lions to a 49-12, Homecoming Night victory to maintain their share of the Lackawanna Football Conference Division 3 lead.
Tyler Jervis, Isaac Ryon and Max Kimmel each scored two touchdowns. Jervis had a hand in the team’s three first-half touchdowns, running for the first two, then passing to Kimmel.
Lackawanna Trail gained at least eight yards on 14 of its 23 running plays in the first three quarters, constantly ripping holes in the defensive front.
None of the holes were bigger than those Edwards found on each of his runs, all of which came on the same play. He ran for 28 and 38 yards in the first quarter, then 13, 9 and 67 yards on his three third-down carries.
“We were really fundamentally sound tonight,” sophomore guard Anthony Paolucci said. “(Guard) Colin Owens and (center) Chris (Kohinsky) did a good job tonight starting up our inside trap game.”
The Edwards touchdown came in the middle of a third-quarter stretch in which the Lions scored on three straight offensive plays. The flurry of 21 points in less than five minutes put the lead at 42-6 with 4:09 left in the quarter and invoked the running clock of the Mercy Rule.
Ryon ran for 165 yards on 10 carries. He started the outburst with a 10-yard run.
Sean Dwyer had a 65-yard punt return for an apparent touchdown wiped out by penalty, but Edwards went 67 yards on the first play of the drive.
“The linemen made the holes for me and I just hit them full speed,” Edwards said.
Like the other backs, Edwards found himself running free in the Susquehanna secondary. The Lions ran for 338 yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries in the first three quarters.
“I’m very proud of our offensive line,” Lions coach Steve Jervis said of a group that also includes tackles Lucas Evans and Bubba Gow and tight ends Kaylix Douglas and Blake Stage. “They’ve improved so much as the year has gone on.”
Ryon completed the third-quarter scoring on a 54-yard touchdown on the next Lions play after the Edwards touchdown.
Kimmel, who caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jervis with 1:50 left in the half, jumped in front of a pass near the home bench and took it 48 yards or a score on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Jervis scored on a 5-yard run to cap Lackawanna Trail’s first drive.
William Marcy scored for Susquehanna on a 1-yard run with 8:06 left in the half. A pass attempt for the go-ahead, two-point conversion was incomplete.
Jervis added to the lead with a 12-yard touchdown run.
Weston Yannone ran 46 yards for the second Susquehanna touchdown.
The Lions (7-1 overall and 3-0 in the division) go to Holy Cross on October 19. The Sabers (5-3, 1-2) are at Carbondale on Friday night.
