NORTH POCONO 21, SCRANTON 3
In Moscow, North Pocono broke a 4-game losing streak by surprising the Scranton Knights 21-3 in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 contest.
The Knights looked as though they would score early, as they drove to the North Pocono 6, but their drive ended there on downs. After North Pocono was unable to move the football, disaster struck the Trojan special teams as a bad snap to the punter was recovered by Scranton deep in North Pocono territory. The North Pocono defense stood tall, as they did all night long, forcing the Knights to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Jorge Rodriguez with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter.
The only other scoring in the first half was set up by a solid special teams play by the Trojans. Sophomore Cole West returned a Scranton punt 46 yards, leading to a 6-yard run by senior tailback Brady Lavery. The extra point made the score 7-3 North Pocono with 4:07 left in the second quarter.
The Trojans stopped another Scranton drive deep in their own territory when Aidan McGuire picked off a Brody Coyle pass in the Trojan end zone, leading to a 76-yard drive by North Pocono to extend the lead to 14-3 on a Michael Stout 3-yard pass from Chase Zimmerman, the score at intermission.
The only second half points came by virtue of a 62-yard sprint through the middle of the Scranton defense by Stout, giving North Pocono its largest lead of the night at 21-3.
Neither team was able to mount any serious scoring drives in the final quarter as North Pocono completely stifled the Scranton attack, not allowing a touchdown for the first time this season.
North Pocono (4-4 overall, 1-3) travels to Delaware Valley on Friday night while Scranton (5-3, 1-3) returns home to host Abington Heights. Both games are Division 1 matchups.
