NORTH POCONO 23 PITTSTON AREA 13
In Moscow, where visiting Pittston Area controlled much of the first half of play, North Pocono scored a highly competitive win over the Patriots 23-13. The Trojans stay undefeated while Pittston Area fell to 0-2.
Pittston Area dominated yardage and first-down totals in the first half, only to see each drive come apart as a result of mistakes or penalties. After a scoreless first quarter, the Trojans were able to jump ahead on a Chase Zimmerman 1-yard sneak with 9:22 remaining in the half. After the extra point was missed, North Pocono led 6-0, a lead which they carried into the half.
As the third quarter began, Pittston Area quickly knotted the affair as halfback C.J. Pietrzak raced 55 yards for the score. A blocked extra point made the score 6-6. North Pocono reestablished control with 14 consecutive points to conclude the 3rd quarter. Zimmerman, a talented sophomore quarterback, found classmate Cole West with a 22-yard scoring strike. Sam Magnotta converted the point after and, with 3:51 remaining in the period, North Pocono led 13-6. Freshman phenom Joe Briskie added to the Trojans’ total with a 30-yard scamper to paydirt and, after Magnotta connected once again, the teams headed to the final quarter with North Pocono ahead 20-6.
Pittston Area got back into the game early in the final period on a 10-yard pass from Matt Walter to Lucas Lopresto. With 9:12 left, the Patriots had crawled to within one touchdown. Using outstanding ball control keyed by crucial first downs, the Trojans were able to add a 20-yard field goal by Magnotta to increase their lead to 23-13 with just a minute left.
At 2-0, North Pocono will visit winless Wyoming Valley West in Week 3. Pittston Area hosts Nanticoke Area in a matchup of 0-2 teams.
