HAZLETON AREA 20, PITTSTON AREA 14
Ashton Karlick scored 14 points in the final 3:43 Friday night to rally host Hazleton Area past Pittston Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game.
The Patriots carried a 14-6 lead from the 1:43 mark of the first quarter for the next 34 minutes before Karlick led the late rally.
Karlick, who finished with 145 yards rushing, ran for two touchdowns and caught the tying two-point conversion pass during the comeback.
Both teams played without their starting quarterbacks, Austin Wilson for Hazleton Area and Matt Walter for Pittston Area.
Hazleton Area’s Freddy Corrado and Pittston Area’s Paulie Ferentino each passed for a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
The Cougars scored less than two minutes into the game on Corrado’s 49-yard pass to Yohansel Moran.
Ferentino hit Lucas Lopresto for the go-ahead two-pointer after the first Pittston Area score, then lofted a perfect pass to Lopresto as he crossed the goal line near the left flag for a 26-yard touchdown.
Hazleton Area drove more than 90 yards late in the second quarter, only to have Gerry Groom’s end zone interception preserve the eight-point halftime lead for Pittston Area.
Karlick went around right end for 34 yards to allow the Cougars to finally break through, then he caught Corrado’s conversion pass for the tie.
Hazleton Area made a stop, then went in for Karlick’s game-winning, 5-yard touchdown with 21.1 seconds remaining.
Pittston Area became the first WVC team to complete the conference portion of its schedule, going 1-4 in Division 1. The Patriots (2-6) host Wallenpaupack (3-5) in a non-league game Friday.
Hazleton Area (5-3 overall, 3-1 in the division) has a chance to tie defending champion Dallas for first place when it travels to play the Mountaineers (5-3, 4-0) Friday night in the division finale for each team.
