In Carbondale, the Chargers continued to impress with a 43-6 win over Montrose.
Freshman signal-caller Cole Becchetti has been the story all season long for Carbondale Area. The Chargers, now at 4-2, have utilized the multi-faceted skill set of Becchetti to tremendous advantage. The freshman put the Chargers on the board first with less than two minutes gone in the football game when he scampered 65 yards to score. Ethan Brewen carried over for the 2-point conversion to give Carbondale an 8-0 advantage.
Both teams struggled to move the football throughout the remainder of the first period and into the second. Carbondale added to their lead when Jordan Myers scored from 3 yards out with 9:16 left before the half. The extra point try was unsuccessful. After forcing a Montrose punt, Daron McKenzie settled under the ball and carried the football 65 yards for another Charger touchdown. Another Brewen carry made the score 22-0.
With just seconds remaining before halftime, Becchetti found wideout Daniel Gonzalez open for a 51-yard scoring aerial to put the homestanding Chargers ahead 28-0 at the half.
The Chargers marched to the Montrose 2-yard line late in the third quarter where Brewen capped off the drive. He added another 2-point conversion to put the mercy rule into effect at 36-0.
Montrose was able to get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter courtesy of Jamier Robinson. The senior scatback raced 70 yards for the lone Meteor score.
The Chargers closed the scoring when Cole Balderas notched Carbondale’s fourth rushing touchdown of the evening, this one from 5 yards away. T.J. Wiggins extra point made the final tally 43-6.
Carbondale (4-2) has a huge divisional contest next weekend as they travel to Tunnel Hill to face red-hot Lackawanna Trail. Montrose (0-5) will host Holy Redeemer in a battle of winless programs.
