Recap

WESTERN WAYNE 28 LACKAWANNA TRAIL 7
At Western Wayne, in a battle between two teams who have serious playoff aspirations, the homestanding Wildcats used big plays by Sean Owens and a strong running game to defeat Lackawanna Trail 28-7. The win moves Western Wayne to 2-0 and establishes them as one of the best 3A schools in all of District 2.

After a scoreless first quarter in which the teams traded field position, Western Wayne struck first when quarterback John Pyatt connected with Owens on his first lengthy touchdown of the evening, this one from 69 yards out. The extra point was successful and the Wildcats led 7-0 with 5:55 left before halftime.

Owens contributed his second spectacular score of the evening when he stepped in front of a Tyler Jervis pass and raced 70 yards to paydirt. The turnover stalled a Trail drive, their first sustained march of the evening. The extra point by Jacob Wells staked Western Wayne to a 14-0 advantage, a tally that held to intermission.

The Lions of Coach Steve Jervis finally broke the ice in the third quarter as Jervis snuck over from 1 yard out to cut the lead in half at 14-7. The score game with 4:46 left in the third quarter, evidence of the outstanding play of the Western Wayne defense which limited the effectiveness of the famed Trail Wing-T offense all night long.

The fourth quarter belonged completely to the Cats who began the scoring as Josh Vinton scampered through the Trail defense from 15 yards out to provide the Coach Shane Grodack’s team with some breathing room at 21-7. Western Wayne closed out the scoring as John Pyatt scored from a yard out to provide the Cats with their final margin of victory, 28-3.

Western Wayne, now 2-0, hosts Wyoming Area in an interesting inter-league contest next week. Trail looks to rebound when they host the winless Berwick Bulldogs.
