SUSQUEHANNA 41, HOLY CROSS 14

By Tom Robinson

SUSQUEHANNA – William Marcy celebrated Senior Night, his final scheduled game at William Emminger Memorial Field, by making sure the Sabers would have at least one more game there this year.

Marcy surpassed 1,000 yards rushing on the season, accounted for five touchdowns and added contributions on defense and special teams Saturday night while helping Susquehanna secure the second seed and home field in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs with a 41-14, Lackawanna Football Conference Division 3 romp over Holy Cross.

“This means everything,” Marcy said. “I grew up waiting for this day. As a kid, I used to dream of being at the high school football field and now I’m here. I’m doing what I love. It means the world to me.”

Marcy carried 15 times for 198 yards and four touchdowns, hit a 31-yard touchdown on his only pass attempt and caught a pass for 13 more yards. He blocked a punt and picked up 56 yards on two kickoff returns. On defense, he added two tackles and an assist.

The big game on the ground pushed Marcy’s rushing totals to 1,043 yards and 11 touchdowns on this season, allowing him to join quarterback Weston Yannone and make Susquehanna the only District 2 team with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers. Marcy is approaching 2,500 yards in his three-year career, but this is the first time he has reached the 1,000-yard milestone for a season.

Susquehanna secured its first winning season since 2018. The Sabers finished 2-3 in the division and improved to 6-4 overall. They will try to defeat Dunmore (4-6) for the second time this season and for just the third time ever when they open the playoffs Saturday in their usual afternoon setting.

Holy Cross finished 0-5 and 3-7.

Susquehanna dominated in the one home night game it plays each season under portable lights.

The Sabers led 20-0 after one quarter, 34-0 at halftime and 41-0 through three quarters.

They had a 14-1 advantage over Holy Cross in first downs in the first half and scored on their first four possessions.

Marcy ran for scores of 4 and 6 yards in the first quarter, 36 yards in the second and 20 in the third. He passed to Mason Keyes for the final score of the first half.

The other first-half touchdown came when Yannone was headed in for a score and tried to pitch to lineman Caeden Williams to let him do the honors at the end of a 43-yard play. Williams could not handle the pitch, but wound up falling on the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown.
Susquehanna limited Holy Cross to 40 yards and two first downs through three quarters. William Hobart had three tackles for losses, Rykin Hobart had a sack and another tackle for a loss and Ryder Hobart had a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble. Williams was in on a team-high nine tackles.
Holy Cross scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 1-yard run by Josh Lentowski and a 49-yard pass from Tyler Kohut to Connor Farrell.
