HAZLETON AREA 13 WEST SCRANTON 3
At Scranton Memorial Stadium in a game played at 4:00 on Friday afternoon, the visiting Cougars of Hazleton Area notched their first win of the season, defeating West Scranton 13-3. The loss dropped West Scranton to 0-3 heading into their traditional Bell Game matchup against Scranton High School next weekend.
West Scranton showed the ability to move the ball in the first half and got on the board first on a 32-yard field goal by senior, Bryan Barbosa, in the second period. The Invaders had another first-half drive reach the Cougar 2-yard line when, on 4th and goal, West dropped a pass in the end zone that would have extended their lead. The half ended with West Scranton holding tight to a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Hazleton struck twice, both on lengthy pass plays. Quarterback Austin Wilson connected with Yohansel Moran on an out and up pattern that found the speedy junior receiver behind the West Scranton secondary. Later in the quarter, Johnson once again found senior back JohnCarlos Peralta alone in the secondary on a fake screen pass. The two scores in the 3rd quarter put the Cougars ahead to stay, 13-3.
Johnson was the most effective ball carrier for Hazleton Area, gashing the West defense on quarterback scrambles and quarterback draws. West Scranton was ineffective in the passing game and was hampered by three fumbled center exchanges. Though West won the turnover battle 2-0, they were unable to put the ball in the end zone against a stingy Cougar defense.
Coming off their first win, Hazleton Area will travel to winless Berwick on Friday night.
