In Clarks Summit, Abington Heights combined a gritty defense with the stellar talents of junior quarterback Nick Bradley to overwhelm Hazleton Area 27-0 in the regular season finale for both programs. The Comets finished their regular slate at 6-4 while the Cougars fell to 5-5.
It was actually the Cougars who mounted the most serious scoring drive early in the contest, marching 68 yards in 11 plays to the Comets’ 3-yard line. There the drive stalled after a huge loss on first down followed by three unsuccessful attempts to find receivers in the end zone.
Finally, in the second quarter, utilizing targets Shawn Theodore and Gavin Anders, the Comets put themselves in position to take a shot on a deep ball. Bradley found Theodore over the top of the Hazleton defense on a 47-yard scoring strike the put Abington ahead 7-0 with 2:30 left to play before halftime.
In the second half, the Comets were more efficient and more successful on the offensive side. After a short Hazleton punt allowed the Comets to begin their drive in Cougar territory, Bradley connected with Theodore again on a 22-yard aerial to the end zone.
The Comets’ next scoring drive was highlighted by a 31-yard completion to Shane Brower and a 24-yard toss to Anders. Tailback Dominic Vergnetti did the scoring honors for the Comets, bursting through from 4-yards out.
Appropriately, it was Bradley who put the final touches on the impressive victory for Abington Heights. The strong-armed signal caller rolled left and kept rolling, 55 yards to paydirt giving the Comets their final margin of 27-0.
Abington Heights has garnered the top seed in the 5A district tournament and will host winless Wyoming Valley West next weekend as the playoffs begin. In 6A, third seed Hazleton will travel to Williamsport to face the Millionaires in the semifinal round of the District 2-4 subregional.
