BERWICK 48, HANOVER AREA 7

Berwick kept things simple Friday night while picking up its first win under coach C.J. Curry, grandson of George Curry, the coach who led the Bulldogs to six Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state titles in the program’s glory days.

Ty Wilkerson ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries to lead a 468-yard ground game that carried Berwick to a 48-7 romp over visiting Hanover Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 game.

Both teams entered the game with 0-4 overall records. Berwick is now 1-1 in the division while Hanover Area is 0-1.

Wilkerson opened the scoring with a 61-yard touchdown run and Caleb Yost added the first of his two extra points for a 7-0 lead after just 2:18.

Hanover Area had to fall on a bad punt snap in the end zone, giving Berwick a safety and 9-0 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Billy Hanson, who took over at quarterback this week, ran for a 4-yard touchdown and 16-0 lead with four minutes left in the quarter.

Wilkerson scored again from 57 yards in the final minute of the quarter, giving Berwick a 22-0 lead.

Touchdown runs of 16 yards by Hanson and 14 yards by Wilkerson in the second quarter made the halftime score 35-0.

Logan Robinson provided the extra point with 1:05 left in the half to get the lead to 35-0 so that the entire second half could be played with the running clock of the Mercy Rule.

Rocco Romeo scored on a 3-yard run midway through the third quarter.

Brock Sims scored from the 4 and Luke Keifer added the kick for a 48-0 lead with 6:08 remaining.

The 48 points doubled Berwick’s output from the first four games combined.

Hanover Area broke the shutout with 3:29 left on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Logan Richardson to Deacon Eisenbach.

Berwick (1-4) will visit Wyoming Area next Friday while Hanover Area (0-5) will look for their first win against Tunkhannock which will be played at Wilkes-Barre Area Stadium.
