DUNMORE 47, SUSQUEHANNA 34

Gabe Franek scored four touchdowns and Dunmore made Susquehanna pay for failed fourth-down gambles Saturday when the third-seeded Bucks knocked the second-seeded Sabers out of the District 2 Class 2A playoffs with a 47-34 road victory at William Emminger Memorial Field.

Franek scored the game’s first two touchdowns for a 14-0 lead after one quarter. He scored two more touchdowns in succession as part of a 26-point third quarter that put the game into the Mercy Rule before Susquehanna attempted a fourth-quarter comeback.

Susquehanna failed to convert fourth-and-nine from its 42 on the game’s first possession, fourth-and-35 with a pass from punt formation from its 10 midway through the third quarter and fourth-and-13 from its 30 later in the quarter.

There were 13 playoff games Friday night involving District 2 teams in either district, subregional or Eastern Conference play and every one of them was one by the higher seed playing on its home field. Dunmore was the weekend’s only exception with its road win Saturday.
Franek carried 18 times for 106 yards and three touchdowns while Izaiah Parker surpassed his yardage total with 116 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries. Franek also scored on his only pass reception, a 2-yarder.

Susquehanna scored 22 straight fourth-quarter points to get back within the final margin of 13 points with 4:41 left, but never touched the ball again.

Dunmore avenged a 25-21 loss at Susquehanna earlier in the season. The Bucks (5-6) will play at Riverside (10-1) Friday night for the district title. The Sabers finished 6-5.

The Bucks won for the fifth time in seven games since starting the season 0-4.
Jacob Costanzo stopped the fourth-and-10 reverse with some help from Franek, who then carried three straight times for 43 yards and the game’s first score.

Franek scored from the 32 and Eric Reesey added the first of his five extra points for a 7-0 lead.
Costanzo, who also had five tackles and three assists, recovered a fumble two plays later.

Dunmore needed to convert two fourth downs to cover the 25 yards, scoring on fourth-and-goal when Jack McNeff rolled right and found Franek alone in the middle near the back of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown.

Susquehanna’s William Marcy returned the ensuing kickoff 57 yards to set up his own 13-yard touchdown on the third play of the second quarter.

Dunmore made it 21-6 at halftime on a 1-yard sneak by McNeff after pushing Susquehanna back to fourth-and-33 and forcing the Sabers to punt from the end zone.

Susquehanna got to the 3 as the clock was running down, but ran one hurried play 8from there and was thrown for a loss.
Parker ran 59 yards on a counter up the middle on the second play of the second half to help Dunmore start building to a 47-12 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Susquehanna answered on its third play of the third quarter when quarterback Weston Yannone broke a 63-yard touchdown run.

The Bucks put up the next 20 points.

Franek scored on 10- and 11-yard runs, then Parker ran the same play as his first touchdown and ran free for a 41-yard touchdown.
Rykin Hobart took an end around 36 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter and the Sabers kept charging.
Yannone ripped the ball from the arms of a Dunmore ballcarrier and took it the other way for an 84-yard fumble return touchdown.
Marcy then found Mason Keyes for an 88-yard touchdown on a half-back option and Yannone passed to Meyers for the final score, etc.
