DELAWARE VALLEY 35, ABINGTON HEIGHTS 28

Logan Olsommer scored the game-winning touchdown with :16 seconds remaining to cap a comeback for Delaware Valley as they defeated Abington Heights 35-28 at The Pit on Saturday.

Mike Iuzzolino carried the ball 36 times for 225 yards and four touchdowns, and every one of those touchdowns was needed as Abington moved the ball through the air and into the end zone.

Big plays started this game as Iuzzolino broke a 54-yard run for the first touchdown of the game. Three plays later, Comets QB Nick Bradley hit Shane Brower with a 58-yard catch and run TD to tie the game.

The Warriors put together a 14-play, 83-yard drive to get the lead back with Iuzzolino scoring from 1 yard out. But it only took Abington three plays again to tie the game when Bradley found Shawn Theodore for a 69 yard touchdown pass.

The Comets defense took center stage on the next drive when Olsommer was sacked and fumbled with Abington recovering the ball in Delaware Valley territory. A six play drive was capped off by Brower’s second touchdown of the game and a 21-14 Abington Heights lead.

Delaware Valley would mount one more drive before half but Olsommer was picked off in the end zone by Theodore to end the half.

Both offenses couldn’t find the end zone in the early third quarter until DV put together 10-play, 72 yard drive and another Iuzzolino touchdown to tie the game.

The teams traded punts entering the fourth quarter when finally Abington hit another big play, this time a Thatcher Loss 39-yd touchdown run to give the Comets a 28-21 lead.

Abington Heights appeared to force a three and out, but on the enusing punt, the Comets were penalized for roughing the kicker and an automatic first down. Four players later, Iuzzolino would cross the goalline for the fourth time and tie the game at 28.

The Comets would drive again in the Warriors terriotory, but were stopped on 4th down. Then DV rode Iuzzolino back down the field. On a 2nd down and 8 at the Comets 10, Olsommer would fake the handoff to Iuzzolino and score on  a bootleg for the game-winning touchdown.

Bradley threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Both Brower and Theodore had 100+ receiving yards but it wasn’t enough.

Delaware Valley (2-4 overall, 2-1) will leave the state next Saturday to play Lutheran which is located on Long Island, NY. Abington Heights (3-3, 1-2) will visit division leader Scranton Prep at Dunmore High School on Friday.
