Brady Zapoticky and Gavin Lewis connected for three touchdown passes Friday night as Dallas improved its position in two races with Crestwood by defeating the host Comets in a meeting of Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and District 2 Class 4A teams.
Dallas, which won the title last season, clinched at least a tie for first place in WVC Division 1 by winning the meeting of what were the last two teams with perfect records within the division. The Mountaineers also passed Crestwood into second place in the power ratings race for the second seed in the district playoffs, making it possible that they will be hosting a rematch in three weeks.
Lewis finished with 13 catches for 194 yards.
Zapoticky went 18-for-34 for 265 yards and also ran for a score.
Lewis pulled in a Zapoticky pass while running along the goal line on a crossing pattern for the only score of the first quarter.
The teams traded rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, then Lewis pulled in a 25-yard pass from Zapoticky while backpedaling deep in the end zone. The score put the Mountaineers up 21-7 at halftime.
Dallas added a 12-yard Zapoticky run and a safety on a bad punt snap to take a 30-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
Lewis then took a screen pass 74 yards for the last Dallas score with 9:47 left.
Nate Walsh returned the ensuing kickoff for a Crestwood touchdown.
Dylan Geskey from Dallas and Lincoln Bibla from Crestwood had the second-quarter touchdown runs.
Dallas (5-3 overall, 4-0 in the division) will try to extend its five-game winning streak and take the division title outright when it hosts the new second-place team, Hazleton Area (5-3, 3-1) Friday night.
Crestwood (4-4, 2-1) is at Wilkes-Barre Area (3-4, 1-2).
