LACKAWANNA TRAIL 39, CARBONDALE 6

At Tunnel Hill, Lackawanna Trail won an important Lackawanna Football Conference Division 3 matchup by dominating Carbondale Area 39-6 in front of a big home crowd.

Trail took the opening kickoff and immediately went to work. Demitrius Douglas was the hero on the initial Lion drive. He picked up a 3^rd and 19 on a misdirection handoff out of the shotgun to extend the Trail march. Quarterback Tyler Jervis then found Douglas alone on a fly pattern behind the Carbondale Area defense for a 44-yard scoring pass. The extra point was missed and the Lions held a 7-0 lead with less than four minutes gone in the football game.

Carbondale Area managed to move the ball inside the Trail 10 yard-line on their first drive of the game. On 4^th and 1 from the 7, the Chargers’ freshman signal caller Cole Becchetti was sacked to end the march.

The Lions wasted little time in adding to their lead. Trail covered 84 yards in just 4 plays. Once again, the points came courtesy of the arm of quarterback Tyler Jervis. The coach’s son connected with speedy senior wideout Max Kimmel on a 54-yard pitch and catch. The extra point try failed again, keeping the score at 12-0 with 10:40 remaining in the half.

The Chargers quickly answered on the ensuing drive. Moving the ball 76 yards in 8 plays, Carbondale Area featured the passing of Becchetti. The freshman converted a 3^rd and 6 early in the drive by hooking up with Francisco Roman on a 17-yard sideline pass. On 2^nd and 10 from the Lion 45, Becchetti lofted a pass that was tipped by defensive back Max Kimmel before falling into the arms of Daniel Gonzalez. Gonzalez completed the scoring play to make it 12-6 with 6:21 left to play before halftime.

Once again, the Lions could not be stopped, scoring on their third consecutive drive of the first half. The drive showcased the talents of back Demitrius Douglas once again. Douglas scooted 22 yards on 3^rd and 4 to the Chargers’ 35-yard line. He then grabbed a swing pass from Jervis and tiptoed down the sideline to the 10. On the very next play, Douglas burst through the Charger line to paydirt. After a third consecutive missed extra point, the score stood at 18-6.

The Chargers then attempted to cut into the Trail lead. After a pass interference call against the Lions put the ball at the Trail 42, Becchetti had a pass over the middle picked off by Trail’s Logan Edwards, finishing the last real chance for Carbondale Area to score. The teams went to the locker rooms with the score at halftime holding at 18-6.

After forcing a Charger punt on the opening drive of the half, Trail marched 58 yards in 5 plays, capping the drive on a 6-yard run by Isaac Ryon. Ryon then converted the extra point to make it 25-6 Trail with 7:33 left in the third period.

Once again, a Charger punt was followed by a Trail scoring drive. Starting with their best field position of the evening at the Carbondale 37, the Lions covered that distance in 7 plays. Sean Dwyer, replacing Douglas who had left the game with an apparent ankle injury, scored on a fine cutback run of 14 yards. Ryon’s extra point with 1:28 left in the third stanza made it 32-6.

The Lions capped the scoring by rolling 43 yards in 7 plays. Dwyer delivered the key play of the drive, racing 29 yards down the sideline to the Charger 10. On second and goal from the 12, Dwyer again advanced the football to the one-yard line. From there, it was Jervis who bulled over. Ryon’s final extra point closed the scoring at 39-6.

The Lions, with their record now standing at 6-1, will host Susquehanna next Friday evening. Carbondale Area will look to rebound from their 3^rd loss of the season when they travel to Taylor to face unbeaten Riverside.
