In Throop, the Spartans of Mid-Valley improved to 2-0 with a convincing 28-7 victory over Berwick. Standout tailback Jakob Lesher continued his assault on the Mid-Valley record book, rushing for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns on 26 carries. The Bulldogs fell to 0-2.

Though the Spartans controlled the football throughout the first quarter, it was Berwick that got on the scoreboard first. After a timeout late in the period, Ty Wilkerson stepped in front of a Brett Yanoski pass and followed a convoy of blockers 71 yards down the sideline. With just 13 ticks left on the first period clock, the Dawgs led 7-0.

The Spartans took control of the contest in the second quarter. A 7-play 44-yard drive was capped by Caleb Perry’s one-yard burst. Mid-Valley regained possession of the football with less than a minute remaining before halftime. Lesher, exhibiting a rare combination of speed and power, rocketed 40 yards to the end zone. The PAT resulted in a halftime score of 14-7.

Mid-Valley capitalized on a Berwick error to score their first touchdown of the second half. Jake Bondy intercepted an Ashton Smith pass and returned the pick to the Bulldog 16-yard line. Shortly thereafter, Lesher found paydirt again, this time from 5-yards out. Berwick then used a Mid-Valley turnover to reach the 5-yard line, threatening to get back into the game. Their drive stalled on downs at the 10-yard line just prior to the end of the quarter.

Lesher finished matters in the final period as he patiently followed blockers 28 yards to his third score of the game and his 8th in just two games. The Mid-Valley defense was stout all night long, eliminating any running game for Berwick.

In a huge early season matchup next week, Mid-Valley will face off against rival Old Forge in a battle of 2-0 teams. Berwick, still searching for its first win, will face no easy task next week as the Bulldogs head to Lackawanna Trail.
