2024 PREVIEW
Coach Bob Stelma started his head coaching career last season with a win in the season opener, but unfortunately, they lost the rest of the games in 2023. The Spartans do bring back some experienced players and hope that they can start to take an upward trajectory with the program. It’s been a struggle in recent years, but there are some positives heading into 2024.
There will be a quarterback competition between Kam Ingram, Carson Brown, Noah Council, and Damien Eastman. The running game should be better with the return of tailback Paul Riggs. Tyler Mattis, William Lebron, Keegan Walsh, and Jacob Stevens will provide depth at the position. The new fullbacks will be Jake Dubaskas, Lorenzo Johnson or Carter Isbel. Mattis got time at wide receiver last season and should play there again with Nick Velders, Chase Meyers, Jiasen Smith, Leland Alexander, and Preston Sninsky all possibly get reps. Ingram played at tight end, and if he doesn’t end up the quarterback, he will be back at that position. Amor Smith and Tyler Ruddy are possibilities there as well.
The Spartans have struggled up front in recent years and return one starter in left tackle Gavin Brady. Wil Hebda or Jayden Ford-Spivey will be right guard. Ruddy played some center there last year with Peyton Sninsky and Liam Corbett possibilities. Kahmar Smith or Jack Keating will be the right guard and Corbett, Dabian Maldonado, or Bradley Lamoreau could get the right tackle spot.
Amor Smith and Ingram are slated to be the defensive ends with Corbett a backup. Isbel returns at defensive tackle while Hebda, Maldonado, Brady, Jayden Ford-Spivey, and Kahmar Smith possibly in the rotation. Outside linebacker could be Chase Meyers, Jiasen Smith, Keegan Walsh, Carson Brown, Gadgidas Reisinger, or Dyquan Daniels. The strength of the defense will be in the middle backers as Riggs, Dubaskas and Ruddy were all starters last season. Ingram, Johnson, Stevens, and Lebron will provide depth inside. Alexander is back as the starting safety. Either Quair Irvin, Preston Sninsky, Alexander, Velders, Mattis, or Damien Jackson will be the new cornerbacks
The kicking game should be solid with Roger Staron back as the placekicker and Ingram as the punter.
