This is the 13th edition of our Five To Watch series. We thank Attorney Michael Ossont of The Mattioli Law Firm for returning as our title sponsor for Five To Watch. There are 32 teams in the WVC and LFC plus Holy Redeemer so it’s impossible to recognize every single player who might be deserving. The players we do list are some of the best at their position or have an interesting role coming up in 2024 for their team. Players will be recognized at only one position, even if they are capable two-way players. For players who don’t make the list, we hope you strive to make our lists at the end of the season because they are the ones that really count.

Here are the running backs (Listed alphabetically):

Mason Avery, Sr. – Honesdale
Height: 5-10 Weight 175
@MasonAvery_3

After a solid sophomore campaign, Avery established himself as one of the best running backs in the LFC last season. He rushed for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns. Avery also has a burst of speed that can get him to the end zone once he gets past the second level. He is also an accomplished wrestler and that skill set complements his running ability. Avery should be the focus again of the Hornets offense and expect him to also get more involved in the passing game. Special teams is another part of the game he can have an impact. He also is a solid defensive back who brings experience to the Honesdale secondary. Avery was named an LFC Division II First Team athlete in 2023.

Demetrius Douglas, Sr. – Lackawanna Trail
Height: 5-10 Weight 180
@Demitriusdoug5

Douglas’ ability fits perfectly with the Lions Wing-T offense and last year we got a taste of what he is capable of. He rushed for 811 yards and averaged 9.5 yard per carry. Douglas has a great combination of speed and strength and has impressed the Trail coaching staff with his high football IQ. He takes over as the primary ball carrier this upcoming season and will also be a force on defense at outside linebacker. Douglas was named an LFC Division III First Team running back last season.

Dylan Geskey, Sr. – Dallas
Height: 5-11 Weight 200
@DylanGeskey

Geskey has been an regular on the NPF all-star lists. Early in his career as a fullback and then last year as the Mountaineers’ primary tailback. The bad news for opponents is he can run over you like a fullback or past you with tailback speed. Geskey rushed for 1,529 yards and 28 touchdowns last year. He now has over 1,900 rushing yards for his career. Geskey is also a capable receiver although he was used less in that role last season (he had 31 receptions as a sophomore). He was named the WVC Division 1 Most Valuable Player and a First Team running back in 2023.
Geskey Highlights

Jakob Lesher, Sr. – Mid Valley
Height: 6-2 Weight 165
@JakobLesherr

Lesher was a workhorse for the Spartans last season accounting for 55% of their offense and that number could go up this season. He ran the ball 206 times for 1,485 yards while adding 109 receiving yards. He also had a total of 19 touchdowns. Lesher has a good chance to become Mid Valley’s all-time leading rusher if he can repeat last year’s numbers. The Spartans will find ways to get him the ball in space and that should lead to him being more involved in the passing game. Lesher was named an LFC Division II First Team running back last season.
Lesher Highlights

Josh Vinton, Sr. – Western Wayne
Height: 5-8 Weight 175
@Joshua_vinton28

Vinton became the full-time starter at tailback last year and rushed for 1,547 yards for the Wildcats while adding 23 total touchdowns. He now has rushed for 2,850 for his career. He is the highest returning rusher in District 2 coming into this 2024 season and averaged 19 carries per game. With Western Wayne bringing in a new quarterback, the run-heavy Wildcats should push Vinton to over 20 carries per game this season. He is also a starter at defensive back. Vinton was named an LFC Division II First Team running back in 2023.
