2023 PREVIEW

The Mountaineers reached the district semifinals for the second straight year, but that’s not the team goal for 2023. Dallas feels they can go farther. And with a plethora of skill players returning, the Mounts have playmakers to make that happen. The focus will be on the offensive front where they lost four starters.

Quarterback Brady Zapoticky returns and should take his play to the next level. He threw for 1,490 yards his sophomore season. Dylan Geskey moves from fullback to tailback. He is actually the team’s leading returning receiver. Mike Lewis will also see time at running back. Jarratt Webb, Clark Van Orden, and Nico Wilk will all be in the mix at fullback. Zach Paczewski returned from an early season knee injury in 2022 and is back to 100%. Gavin Lewis, Nate Malarkey, and Lucas Tirpak will compliment the wide receiver position. Nick Farrell is a retruning starter at tight end with John Cummings Cole Rigol, and Wilk providing depth.

Center Dan Sabulski is the lone returning starter on the offensive line. Emmet Moore and Zach Williams are in consideration for left tackle; Archie Stephens at left guard and A.J. Fife at right guard. Jake Bryk will also be in the mix to back them up. Brady Rosencrans or Kevin Gring will be the right tackle.

Rosencrans and Webb should be the new starters at defensive end with Williams and Moore also in the rotation. Webb also will move inside at the defensive tackle to join returning starter Sabulski. Stevie Phillips will provide depth. Farrell moves from defensive end to outside linebacker and will be joined by either Cummings, Stephens, or Rigol. Fife will be the inside linebacker with Van Orden, Nico Wilk, and Anthony Vitale also in consideration. The secondary is the most experienced unit on the team with Paczewski and Tirpak back at the corners and Malarkey and Dylan Gesky returning at safety. Gaving Lewism, Mike Lewis, Logan Geskey and Chas Brunges providing depth.

Rowan Laubach was an all-star at punter and will add the place kicking duties to his responsibilites. Sabulski is the long snapper.

QUOTE FROM COACH MANNELLO: Special Teams: We are expecting our returning K/P to have an impact on change of field position plays. He will also take over the place kicking duties with high expectations.
Defense: This could be one of the fastest groups across the board. There are a lot of linebacker types running around out there.
Offense: The new players stepping in the O-Line are seniors with excellent strength and that strength will have to make up for a lack of experience early. The QB has a year under his belt and more will be put on his shoulders this year.
