2022 PREVIEW

It’s been a good run for the Wyoming Area football program and there is no reason to think it won’t continue. The Warriors will face some obstacles as they were hit hard by graduation and they move up to Class 4A. Nonetheless, they should be a contender for the new WVC Division 3 and a playoff team in 2022.

Wyoming Area has to replace some talented players but they have some talent ready to do so. Either Damian Lefkoski or Brady Jones will be the new quarterback. Aaron Crossley returns at running back with Michael Crane and Lidge Kellum also expected to get some carries. Keegan Rusyn should be the new fullback with Nick Scalzo, Matt Rutkoski, John Turner, and Josh Mruk also getting consideration. The receiving corp will have some new faces including Garret Pocceschi, Taden Jendrzejewski, Gage Speece, and Kevin Wiedl on the depth chart as slot receivers and Dominic Colavito, Skyler Pierce, Ryan Jones, and Jacob Morgan being considered at split end. Joe Marranca is back at tight end with Justin Francis, Riley Knaub, and James Hizynski providing depth.

The offensive line has to be rebuilt and will be a key factor for the Warriors. The initial depth chart has left tackle Russell VanAuken, left guard Anthony VanAuken, center Luke Barhight, right guard Ethan Speece and right tackle Chase DeSanto. That could change in training camp with Jacob Gustitus, Sam Rau, Jacob Krulick, Andrew Steinberger, Jayden Jones, and Cody Meade all competing and providing depth up front.

Marranca returns at defensive end while Speece is back at defensive tackle. Justin Francis, Knaub, and Sonny Sabatini will all compete for the other end spot while the VanAuken brothers, Gustitus, Jayden Jones, Rau, DeSanto, Meade, Nick Scalzo, Krulick, and Steinberger could see time at defensive tackle. Crossley returns at linebacker with Hizynski joing him at the other spot. Pierce, Rusyn, Rutkoski, Turner, and Mruk also could see time at the position. It will be a whole new secondary for Wyoming Area with Colavito, Lefkoski, Ryan Jones, Kellum, Morgan, and Gage Speece being considered at cornerback. Saftey candidates are Pocceschi, Jendrzejewski, Crane, and Wiedl.

The special teams will also have new faces and will compete in camp for spots: (Kickers) Liam Burke, Gage Speece, Turner, and Addison Yankovich; (Punter) Francis, Gage Speece, and Turner; (Long Snapper) Luke Barhight, Knaub, and Mruk.

QUOTE FROM COACH SPENCER: Our 2022 Wyoming Area Warriors enter the season as defending Wyoming Valley Conference Division II Champions and PIAA District 2 AAA Finalists. This year’s team will be a combination of some outstanding veterans and a host of talented underclassmen. Leadership and the development of our younger players will be keys to a successful season.
