2022 PREVIEW
Wilkes-Barre showed signs of breaking through last year but couldn’t do enough to turn those opportunities into wins. The Wolfpack have some quality players back, but can they compete in the new WVC Division I? The playmakers are there and it will probably come down to the offensive line and how good the defense progresses.
Freshman Jake Howe could be the new quarterback with veterans Javant McClary the backup. Howie Shiner returns at running back and will be backed up by Dominic Ascerno. Jace John is a returning starter at fullback with Cam Hagenbaugh and Fred White providing depth. The wide receiver group is deep with Mekhi Nelson, Naquan Johnson, and Jovan Goodwin all started at one point last season. There will be a new tight end with either Gannon Redding, Bobby Delescavage, or Connor Kelly getting the call.
Ian Bednar is a four-year starter and will play left guard. Jimmy Gryskewicz will play at one of the tackle spots with Connor Chapple penciled in at center. Gilbert Gonzalez is probably the right guard with Gio Gonzalez, Dan Horgan, Bobby Delescavage and Hagenbaugh providing depth up front.
Jace John is the lone returning starter on the defensive line at end. Hagenbaugh, Delescavage, and White will vie for playing time on the other side. The two tackles spots will be determined in camp with Bednar, Gilbert Gonzalez, Gryskewicz, and Gio Gonzalez all candidates. The linebackers are the strength of the defense with Johnson, Max Gregor*, Gabe Saraceno, Shiner, and Redding all getting significant playing time last season. Kelly will provide depth inside. Goodwin and Nelson are returning starters in the secondary with McClary, Ascerno, and Ariel Lopez expected to compete for the other spot..
Evan Corcoran is back as the placekicker and Joey Egidio will be the new punter. Chapple returns as the long snapper.
QUOTE FROM COACH CINTI: Great group of hard working young men. Alot of returning players with varsity experience. Have to get the younger players up to speed because there is alot of younger players who will also get varsity playing time.
