2022 PREVIEW
Western Wayne was poised to have a big season in 2021, but injuries took away three star players and the ‘Cats had to battle their way through the season. The good news is plenty of young players got experience and that should pay off this season as the Wildcats compete for a division and district title.
Quarterback is a position of strength as Frankie Leyshon returns as the starter. He will also have running back Luke Janiszewski to hand the ball off to. Janiszewski was injured in the second half of the season but he is back healthy for his senior year. Josh Vinton will back him up. Paul Guidice, Carter Mistishin, and Alex Lucke will be in the mix for fullback. The receiving corp has Sean Owens back while Ethan Grodack, Vin Tomasetti, Liam Farley, and Vin Silon will compete to fill other spots. Hayden Mundrake takes over at tight end. Ethan Lamberton, Colton Hoose, and Aiden Keelen will provide depth at the position.
The Wildcats return three starters on the offensive line. Led by three-year starters right guard Kyle Guarino and left guard Nate Swingle. Alex Enslin also returns at left tackle. Evan Dean will be the new center while Doug Champman takes over at right tackle. Tony Donnini, Adam Januszkiewicz, Connor Bryant, and Jared Goldman will also be in the mix on the offensive line.
Defense could be the strength for the ‘Cats as they return Guarino and Swingle up front. Dean and Enslin will provide depth. Janiszewski and Carter Mistishin both are returning on the edge. Guidice is a returning starter at inside linebacker while Januszkiewicz, Lamberton, Lucke, and James Jimenez could also see playing time. Liam Farley and Leyshon are back at the corners while Tomasetti and Grodack will alo see some playing time. Vinton is returning at saftey with Owens and Silon in te mix to get reps.
Mistishin is back to handle kicking duties with Vinton doing the punting.
QUOTE FROM COACH WOLFF: Due to the high volume of injuries in key positions last year, it allowed young talent to get game experience against great competition. Hoping that experience, although with our veteran leadership, we could put together a competitive football team.
